On Oscar night, James Cameron‘s epic film “Avatar” was the “most mocked film of the evening.”

Yes, it broke a world record for being the highest earning film of all time, beating Titanic‘s earnings. But Cameron’s newest masterpiece failed to win critics’ hearts. Considering its success as a blockbuster hit, people are asking, why did Avatar lose big time at the 82nd Academy Awards?

Back in 1997, Titanic earned 14 Academy Awards and bagged a record 11 awards. Meanwhile, “Avatar” only got nine nominations, and took home three.

One reason could be that even though moviegoers all over the world enjoyed Avatar’s breath-taking visuals, “nothing beats real and live human beings on screen.”

Los Angeles Times columnist Patrick Goldstein explains this further when he said, “My suspicion is that academy members still find it difficult to believe that films largely created and sculpted in the computer–whether it’s “Avatar” or the long string of brilliant Pixar films — can be just as worthy and artistic as the old-fashioned live-action ones.”
