Adam Carolla mocks Manny Pacquiao and Philippines

Some comedians fail to realize that they stop being funny when they cross the line. One such example is Adam Carolla, host of The Adam Carolla Podcast. Recently, Carolla outraged so many during a live radio interview where his rant about boxer Manny Pacquiao ended up in several racial slurs including calling the world-famous boxer a “f****n’ idiot”.

Here’s some of what he said:

“Pacquiao doesn’t believe, he says, he doesn’t give blood the month of a fight or a week before a fight because somehow it’s gonna weaken him and what have you.”

“I gotta tell you, if that was a white fighter and probably even a black fighter, if the black fighter was from Atlanta or somewhere like that, someone would go, ‘What the f**k are you talking about? Give your drop of blood. That’s not gonna make a difference.”

“But because he’s from the Philippines and because he’s prayin’ to chicken bones and stuff like that, everyone’s kinda like, ‘Well you gotta respect him for his belief system.’ No you don’t. He’s a f****n’ idiot.”

“They got this and sex tours, that’s all they have over there. Get your s**t together Philippines. Jesus Christ. I mean, again, it’s fine to be proud of your countrymen. But that’s it? That’s all you got?”

He also called Pacquiao “illiterate”. Now that there is a call to boycott his show as well as a petition to get him to make a public apology for making such comments, Carolla now says he is sorry for what he said, tweeting, “Read your comments. Sorry if I offended many of you. I don’t pre-plan my commentary. I try to be provocative, (and) funny but I crossed the line & I’m sorry.”

I just don’t understand this. What did he really do? He is a comedian making people laugh. He makes fun of everyone no different then Chris Rock, Rosie O’Donnell, and George Lopez. It feels like because he is a white male that he gets crap for this. What did he really say? He pointed out that the Philippines have near nothing going for it except Manny Pacquiao and the fact that rich men fly to the Philippines to have sex with men, women and children. Be proud of Manny that is fine. But don’t get mad when you are laughed at by other countries that your biggest ambassador is a guy that gets punched in the face for a living. Plus we are talking about a guy that is unwilling to properly be tested for performance enhancing drugs. Nothing he said was wrong. The only thing he is guilty of is embarrassing the Filipino community! Maybe his rant will help them want to make there own society better instead of going after Carolla for pointing out the obvious!

First of all, the comments he made while they may have been insensetive, they were said on his podcast, which you have to physically put some effort in to go out of your way to download and listen to. It wasn’t on the radio. So I know most of you haven’t heard it. He said it in a rant, which is part of his comedy. Why would you want an apology for him saying something on his podcast, that you wouldn’t have heard (and probably haven’t heard) either way? And if he did apologize what would it do for you?

Second, I’m assuming most of you making these negative comments weren’t fans of his work in the first place. If you had actually listened to his podcasts you would have heard how many times he’s praised Manny Pacquiao as a fighter. He’s also had one of Paquiao’s trainers on who told him a story about Paquiao’s father eating his dog when he was young.

Third if you would have actually heard his comments during his podcast, he was joking, and being funny. Of course he doesn’t know what he’s talking about, just going off making commentary on the fly. Adam would be the first to tell you how uneducated and what a bad reader he is.

Fourth, lighten up. Obviously Paquiao has. And besides, some of the stuff he was joking about is true (ie. sex tourism, the fact that they are trying to elect a boxer to congress, and Pacquiao won’t give blood befor a fight for some unkown reason).

if he was joking and funny while summing up his tirade with a conclusion that the whole nation of the Philippines has nothing or something along that line, he should not give even a token of apology. Podcasting aim is to broad cast, to reach maximum number of people. What sex tourism? There are red houses (illegal) that are operating in some corners of the city but they are not with bright signs advertising about that illicit trade; do they reflect on the whole country. Even in Italy, soccer players and porn star are elected to Parliament. If you hear Pacquiao speak Pilipino (or Tagalog), you will know that this man is deep, his command of the national language is better than most university graduates. We have had lawyers, West Point alumni, Harvard, Wharton, Johns Hopkins graduates but they fall short of reaching out to people. yes, before Filipinos tried a common man but in due time he was kicked out of office because he proved to be of no good. Marcos was brilliant and an all-around person but he ruined the Philippine economy and the democratic institutions. Pacquiao is not running for presidency, he just want to represent the people to the Philippine Congress.He is not a lawyer nor adept in law-making but he is correct, the existing laws are enough if they are only properly implemented.
Now, you can laugh at your heart’s desire but most of us Filipinos do not take this lightly. You may notice that I also posted an apology but that is joke only.
The unconscious and the numb ones do not feel the hurt that corolla caused us. His rant on Pacquiao about not taking blood tests is in the first place without basis (Pacquiao was OK on the 30th and 24th before and immediately after the fight). If he does not like Pacquiao what is his business in attacking the whole nation of the Philippines? In attacking Pacquiao, does it give him the right to attack the whole race?

Actually my mom is Filipino and she has a great sense of humour! Much better than mine and probably more forgiving too.

Eventhough I lean toward the Agnostic East-Asian faiths, and as a medical anthropology major don’t agree with Pacquiao’s thoughts on not giving blood before a fight – calling a country where the majority are Roman Catholics and who also has a sizeable Muslim populous ‘chicken bone worshippers’ is just downright disrespectful. The Filipinos have a very sophisticated and complex history with the constructs of religion, spirituality, morality, and ethics – maybe some reading of the works of their national hero Jose Rizal would make him understand that better.

Additionally while there is prostitution like there is in all countries- and in the case of the Philippines mainly due to poverty and our American soldiers unethical attachments – there are NO sex tours! Filipinos have too much pride and self respect to ever do something like that.

So yeah, I have a problem with ‘celebrity worship’ be it Manny Pacquiao or Adam Carolla! While Pacquiao’s belief system in regards to blood giving may be a tad superstitious and misunderstanding of how fast the human body reproduces blood, Carolla’s racism and rudeness were definately the far more unethical and odiferous behaviour and in order to make amends he should actually go over there and see what Filipinos are actually like.

It isn’t racist to make fun of a country. He never made any statement that could be construed as a dig on all phillipino people. He talked about the country being a shit hole and having nothing going for it. Just because it offended people doesn’t make it racist.

For the author to claim that Carolla made “racial slurs” is a clear case of libel. I hope he sues you.
