apple-releases-iphone-sms-hack-patchApple released a patch to fix the reported SMS hack that allowed hackers complete access to infected iPhones.

The hack was presented to security professionals in the Black Hat security conference and a day after Apple quickly released it’s fix saying, “This morning, less than 24 hours after a demonstration of this exploit, we’ve issued a free software update that eliminates the vulnerability from the iPhone.”

Patching Instructions (via The Examiner):

  1. Launch iTunes.
  2. Hook up your iPhone. You can wait for it to sync, or cancel it by sliding the bar on the iPhone.
  3. Select your iPhone by clicking on it under Devices.
  4. Click the Check for Update button.
  5. You’ll get a popup that asks if you want to install iPhone software version (3.0.1). Click Download and Install.
  6. A software license agreement will popup. Click Next and then Agree.
  7. It will take a few minutes to download the software, backup the iPhone and install the update. During the process, the iPhone will reboot a couple of times, so don’t be alarmed with activity on the iPhone. Once it is finished, the status bar of iTunes will read that the iPhone sync is complete.
