Are alcoholic energy drinks safe? The Food and Drug Administration have recently challenged manufacturers of alcohol-infused energy drinks to prove that they are. This is in action to some complaints that the drinks can cause risky behavior and injury. State attorneys general from New York, California, Maryland and 14 other states have questioned the beverage because it appeals to underage drinkers and “encourage reckless behavior.”

The attorneys general stated that caffeine can mask the effects of alcohol and that the effects lead to “increased risk-taking and other serious alcohol related problems such as traffic accidents, violence, sexual assault and suicide.”

In a letter issued Friday to 30 beverage manufacturers, the FDA is giving them 30 days to submit evidence that the combination of alcohol and caffeine is indeed safe.

FDA special adviser Mike Taylor said, “There are some unusual safety questions raised by the addition of caffeine to these alcoholic beverages. So the burden is on the companies to provide evidence that supports the conclusion this use is safe.”
