Finally, after years, nay, decades of TV run, the soap opera As the World Turns, is coming to an end.

In an announcement made yesterday by CBS, it was revealed that the show’s 54-year run will end on September 17 of next year. The final episode will be its 13,661st episode.

The conclusion is perhaps brought by the show’s declining ratings. Another long-running series, the soap Guiding Light also concluded this year, last September.

Some of the cast members of As the World Turns went on to make a name for themselves, including James Earl Jones, Marisa Tomei, Meg Ryan and Parker Posey.

In general, daytime dramas are not so much of a hit as they used to be because more and more women join the workforce and get day jobs. These dramas came to be known as “soaps” because Procter and Gamble used the time slots to advertise their soap products like Ivory and Duz laundry detergent.

I hate this! First Guiding Light was taken away and now As the World Turns. I have been a faithful viewer for over 44 years and have felt a kidship with several characters. I felt as though some were like family (no I am not out of touch with reality – it is just the best way to describe the feeling). Christmastime is when I will feel the biggest loss. I loved seeing the soap families gathering together – putting differences aside to sing carols, share memories and say blessings. It showed a very human side that despite conflicts family is very important. Having this second soap off the air with leave a void in my life. I have a very fulfilling and joyful life but I enjoyed the relaxing time watching my soaps. I wish the powers would change their minds.
