Finally, after an intensive three-day hunt for the “Arbeit Macht Frei” sign, it is now in safe hands. Polish police found the infamous sign on Sunday night in northern Poland.

Police spokeswoman Katarzyna Padlo told The Associated Press that they have detained five men between the ages 25 to 39 and they will be questioned in Krakow.

Another police spokeswoman, Dariusz Nowak, said the hollow steel sign was found cut into three pieces, with one word each.

As of the moment, the police is not willing to give out information on how the sign was found or what the motive of the thieves were. But a news conference in Krakow scheduled at 0800 GMT (3 a.m. EST) Monday might reveal more details.

Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, “The sign is of the deepest historical importance to the Jewish people and the whole world, and is a tombstone for more than a million Jews.”
