The annual Rose Parade often bestows the honor of being the grand marshal to singers, astronauts, athletes, military men and politicians. But this year, there’s probably no other person who is more fit to lead the traditional Rose Parade than the real American hero, Capt. Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger III.

Sullenberger rode down Colorado Blvd in a vintage 1928 Pierce Arrow with his wife and two daughters as part of the ensemble of flower-draped floats, marching bands and prancing horses. Onlookers watched and cheered for him, as they recall his heroic deed when he safely ditched US Airlines Flight 1549 into the Hudson River in New York, saving the lives of 155 passengers.

Sullenberger grew up watching the Rose Parade. So when he was asked to serve as grand marshal, there was no hesitation. After the parade, Sully said, “It’s really an American institution, a celebration of American values. I think people see those in me, and I’m glad.”

Parade-goers were thrilled to see him. Roy, a 48-year old onlooker, said, “We come every year, but when we found out he was grand marshal, we were really excited. He’s a real hero, not just a celebrity, and a real person, too.”
