Senator John McCain has always been a NO for same sex marriage, having opposed it publicly during his 2008 presidential campaign as well as being vocal about his support for Proposition 8, California’s ban on same sex marriage.

But the senator does not speak for his entire family. As a matter of fact, his wife Cindy recently joined the campaign for same sex marriage and appeared in an ad for NOH8, a gay rights campaign seeking to defeat Prop 8. McCain’s daughter Meghan was also for gay rights and proved it when she also posed for an NOH8 ad last summer.

Founder of NOH8, Adam Bouska, notes that it’s still very “stigmatic” for prominent Republicans to publicly support gay marriage. He wrote, “In the year since we’ve started the NOH8 campaign, we’ve often been surprised at some of the different individuals who have approached us showing their support. Few, though, have surprised us more than Cindy McCain.”

Senator John McCain remains against gay marriage but respects his wife’s views. His spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan issued a statement saying that the senator’s “opposition to gay marriage remains the same. Senator McCain believes the sanctity of marriage is only defined as between one man and one woman.”
