An NFL source said that the Browns are interested in free agent quarterback David Carr, who visited the 49ers today but left without a contract.

According to the Santa Rosa (Calif.) Press Democrat, the 30-year-old Carr is still talking to San Francisco about a two-year deal.

In addition to the Browns, the Cardinals are interested in Carr. The Giants, his previous team, also hopes to re-sign him.

It’s not the first time Browns President Mike Holmgren has been interested in Carr, the No. 1 overall pick in 2002 by the expansion Texans. Holmgren aggressively pursued him in 2007 while with Seattle after Carr was released by Houston. Instead, he signed with the Panthers, where he spent only one season.

In the past two seasons, Carr has been backing up Giants quarterback Eli Manning. He spent his first five seasons in Houston, where failed to produce a winning campaign with the fledging team. His situation there was similar to Tim Couch’s in Cleveland — a No. 1 pick taking over a struggling expansion team and not having a strong enough supporting cast.
