Compensated dating is a growing trend in Hong Kong. It has become a social phenomenon among teens and is essentially similar to prostitution. In compensated dating, girls go on a date with a man for a fee, and more often than not, the date involves sex.

According to Sze, who’s now 19 years old, she started doing it because the girls in her school were also doing it.

A most curious thing about compensated dating are the reasons girls do it. These girls do it for shopping money. Sze, for one, admitted she became jealous when the girls in her school who were into compensated dating were able to buy designer clothes and other luxury items.

A 14-year old girl admitted she got into compensated dating because she needed money to buy a new and expensive phone. She said her parents wouldn’t buy her a new one when she lost her old one.

Social workers are currently on the move to help girls who are trying to get out of this dangerous business.
