Tim Tebow’s appearance in an anti-abortion television ad that will air during the Super Bowl has generated some positive and negative buzz.

He knew his decision to appear in the 30-second ad with his mother, Pam, for Focus on the Family would not be universally accepted, but he wasn’t going to shy away from an issue that was important to him, Tebow said.

On Sunday, he said, “I know some people won’t agree with it, but I think they can at least respect that I stand up for what I believe and I’m never shy about that. I don’t feel like I’m very preachy about it, but I do stand up for what I believe and at least you can respect that.”

He added, “Unfortunately in today’s society not many athletes tend to do that, at least stand for something.”

“Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life” is the ad’s theme. Focus on the Family officials have not elaborated on the specific content of the ad, but it is likely to reference the story Pam Tebow has told before of contracting amoebic dysentery while living in the Philippines in the mid 1980s. The bacterial infection sent Pam Tebow into a coma and she was treated with strong medications. She recovered, but doctors told her those medications had damaged the fetus she was carrying and urged her to have an abortion. Pam Tebow refused and Tim was born on Aug. 14, 1987.
