Sports Illustrated has finally chosen their “Sportsman of the Year” and it’s none other than Derek Jeter, captain of the New York Yankees.

Jeter posed for the magazine as he made its cover. He wore his crisp pinstripe uniform, with a shiny black bat held by his right hand which he made to rest on his shoulder. Jeter was photographed near the entrance to a Bronx subway station.

After winning his fifth World Series, Jeter was back at the Yankee Stadium.  He was announced as the Sportsman on the Year on Monday.

During a break in his photo shoot, Jeter told AP, “It’s unbelievable. It was completely unexpected. It came out of the blue. When I heard it, what can you say? It’s one of the greatest honors you can achieve in sports.”

35-year old Jeter is the first Bronx Bomber to be tapped for  the award which has been given out since 1954. Last year’s sportsman choice was Michael Phelps.
