According to a just-published survey from Appcelerator, a maker of developer tools, application developers are eager to start building software for Apple iPad.

Scott Schwarzhoff, the company’s head of marketing, said that nine out of 10 of the 550 developers surveyed by Appcelerator claimed they were “very interested” in creating an Apple iPad application in the next year.

He added, “Developers are overwhelmingly enthusiastic about the tablet.”

Schwarzhoff was surprised by this enthusiasm because the details of the tablet were unknown–at the time of the survey–when compared to interest in other, more established platforms. A total of 86 percent of the developers polled said they were interested in developing for the iPhone, while 68 percent said the same for Google’s Android mobile operating system. The tablet came in third with 58 percent, more than double the 21 percent who named BlackBerry and more than three times the 17 percent who voted for the Palm Pre.
