On Saturday afternoon, a large earthquake off the California coast had Northern California residents reporting the temblor from across the region.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.5 hit about 43.5 kilometers off the coast and about 16 kilometers deep west of Eureka, Calif. at 4:27 p.m. Saturday.

No damage or injuries from the quake were immediately reported.

At least four other aftershocks, all measuring a magnitude 3.5 or higher, were registered in the area within an hour of the main quake.

The quake, respondents to the USGS Web site said, was felt as far south as Santa Cruz, Calif. and as far inland as Reno, Nev., both over 640 kilometers away from the epicenter.

A resident in Grass Valley, Calif. said the quake felt big there and continued shaking for about 25 seconds.
