The news of his death was announced by his sister Kathryn, through Facebook. His daughter Arianna was present along with members of the family that surrounded him at his home at the time of his passing. He is survived by his wife Dena.

In 2008 Karl suffered a series of stroke which paralyzed the right side of his body. Through therapy, the Filipino icon slowly recovered and continued to perform. But even during the height of his career with the funky band P.O.T., Roy had already undergone surgery. I remember watching the band in 70′s Bistro where He would often strum along the line of ribs and stitched breast in between songs.

Hardly can any singer seamlessly integrate the art of performance and entertainment, but Karl was not just any singer, and sadly, he left too soon. Even the weather mourns his death…

LA’s kapitan Kobe Bryant led his team to a final onslaught that broke the seesaw match in the fourth quarter between long-time rivals the Lakers and the Celtics.

With 42 seconds left in the game, the former MVP went for a pull-up that put the Lakers one point ahead 95-94. Rallying from a 5-point deficit, the Lakers scored the final 8 points with Andrew Bynum putting the finishing touches for a 97-94 win.

Bryant was responsible for the dish.

“Andrew is too big. You can’t teach that,” Bryant lectured. “I knew it was going to be a high-percentage shot.”

“It was crazy,” Bynum confirmed. “Kobe came up with that play. He said, ‘They’re not going to be able to know what to do.’ I was able to get deep position and go to work.”

“We love beating this team”

Bryant finished with 26 points and 7 assists while Bynum added 20 more points and 14 rebounds.

“Today was just another example of (Kobe) trusting Andrew,” said Lakers veteran guard Derek Fisher.

“It’s the part of the continued evolution in terms of him doing different things to get over the top.”

But it seems our local hero may face jail time too.

Rozil Lozares, a regional director for the Bureau of Internal Revenues said that a complaint was filed on the Koronadal court first day of March against the boxing champ for failure to submit documents pertaining to his tax returns even after sending three notices and a subpoena. Investigators have been studying the “discrepancies” found in Manny’s 2010 tax return considering his many businesses and endorsements.

The congressman explained that there may have been some miscommunication or honest error on the part of his staff and stressed that he has no intention of violating Philippine laws on tax.

“I already sent a staff member to the BIR office. But if they saw something wrong, I wish they would give us enough time to correct,” the boxer told GMA-7.

If found guilty of the contempt charges, he may serve up to two years in prison.

The U.P. College of Mass Communication (UP CMC) is now accepting nominations for the U.P. Gawad Plaridel which recognizes Filipino media practitioners who have excelled in any of the media (print, radio, film, television, and new media) and have performed with the highest level of professional integrity in the interest of public service.

For 2012, the eighth U.P. Gawad Plaridel will be given to an outstanding television practitioner. Deadline for nomination is on March 20, 2012. The recipient of the U.P. Gawad Plaridel 2012 will be announced on May 15, 2012.

Eligible for the awards are all living Filipino individuals who have excelled in the field of television as producer, director, scriptwriter, announcer, etc. Aside from their probity and integrity, these media practitioners must have produced a body of work that is marked by excellence and social relevance and must have achievements recognized nationally and/or internationally.

Individuals and institutions may nominate potential awardees. Institutions include media corporations, professional media associations, media advocacy groups, educational institutions, cultural foundations and NGOs. Previous nominees may still be considered for this year’s award. All current full-time faculty and staff of the UP CMC are disqualified from the nomination.

The award is named after Marcelo H. del Pilar (nom de plume, Plaridel), the selfless propagandist whose stewardship of the reformist newspaper La Solidaridad helped crystallize nationalist sentiments and ignite libertarian ideas in the 1890s. Like Plaridel, the awardee must believe in the vision of a Philippine society that is egalitarian, participative and progressive; and in media that are socially responsible, critical and vigilant, liberative and transformative, and free and independent.

The U.P. Gawad Plaridel is given every July 4 in commemoration of del Pilar’s death anniversary. The awardee will receive the U.P. Gawad Plaridel trophy designed by National Artist Napoleon Abueva and will deliver the Plaridel Lecture addressing issues relevant to the state and practice of Philippine media.

Nomination forms and award guidelines are available at the U.P. CMC Office of Extension and External Relations (OEER). Interested parties may call the OEER at 920-6864 for details.

AXN viewers in Asia will be able to enjoy the two-hour premiere of The Firm on February 19 (Sunday) at 9.50PM, on the same day it airs across 126 million households on SPT channels globally in Asia, Latin America, Central Europe, Iberia, Italy, Africa, Russia and the Baltics.

An AXN original series based on John Grisham’s bestselling novel, the TV reincarnation picks up ten years after the movie of the same name starring Tom Cruise. Hot shot lawyer, Mitch McDeere, brought down a Memphis law firm fronting the Chicago mob. Mitch and his family attempt to reclaim their lives by moving to Washington DC to start their own firm after leaving the Federal Witness Protection Program. However, the past has a way of catching up with them.

The stellar cast includes Josh Lucas (The Lincoln Lawyer) and Juliette Lewis (Natural Born Killers). Lucas is cast as Mitch McDeere, the role originally made famous by Cruise, with Lewis playing McDeere’s receptionist, Tammy Hemphill (previously played by Holly Hunter in the film). Canadian cast members include Molly Parker (Deadwood) as McDeere’s wife, Abby, and Callum Keith Rennie (Battlestar Galactica) as his brother, Ray, and Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica) as Alex Clark, the firm’s managing partner.

Showrunner Lukas Reiter, a former prosecutor who has worked on The Practice and Boston Legal, was the one who first sought out John Grisham in the hopes of scripting a sequel and eventually got him on board as executive producer. On what to expect from the new Mitch, Reiter teased, “What made Mitch Mcdeere so special is his ability to find the hidden solution long after the average person believes there is no way out…There’s a great amount of fun to be had watching Josh Lucas find those solutions.”

Shot on location in Canada, The Firm will keep viewers on the edge of their seats and fans of Grisham can anticipate the same kinds of drama and thriller feel that made the book and the 1993 film adaptation so original!

Catch the repeat timings of The Firm’s Pilot Episode on Feb 23 at 10:55pm & Feb 26 at 10:20am
New episode every Sunday at 9.55pm
Defending champs Dallas Mavericks gave the “linsane” New York Knicks a good roll to no avail with 104-97 in favor of the New Yorkers.

Jeremy Mamba-killer Lin finished the night with another double-double, scoring 28 points and a career high of 14 assists, putting an end to the Mavs’ impressive 6-game winning streak.

“Looking back, it’s like I was watching them win the championship last year, and that’s obviously where this team wants to go,” praised Lin.

It was a fun roller coaster ride-match. The Mavs had to catch up 12-point lead early assembled by the Knicks at the first quarter. During the third quarter, now it was the Knicks trailing until a fourth quarter rally led by Lin overtook the Mavs, beating them again for the third time in their last 20 outings.

Finals MVP Dirk Nowitzki scored a season-high of 34 points.

In the recent phenomonal rise of American-Taiwanese Jeremy Lin to basketball stardom, here’s what the olympic-style drug testing number one fan and endorser had to tweet last Monday afternoon.

Jeremy Lin is a good player but all the hype is because he’s Asian. Black players do what he does every night and don’t get the same praise.

The jealousy stems from Lin scoring 89 and 109 points in first three and four career starts, respectively the most by any player since the merger between the American Basketball Association and the NBA in 1976-77. He has become the first NBA player with at least 20 points and 7 assists in his first four starts becoming the Eastern Conference Player of the Week after averaging 27.3 points, 8.3 assists and 2.0 steals in those four starts with the Knicks going undefeated even in the absence of Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire (Wikipedia). Sorry Floyd but the hype is pretty much backed up with numbers and not race.

Didn’t Mayweather say similar lines about the popularity of Filipino boxing champ Manny Pacquiao?

Lin credits his success to playing without pressure. “I’ve surrendered that to God. I’m not in a battle with what everybody else thinks anymore,” said Lin.

It seems Floyd is continuously in battle with himself and his ego is just as invincible as his defense strategy. Oh come on Floyd, give Lin and us Asians a fare shake.

The Association for Adults with Autism, Philippines (AAAP) will host an art auction to benefit A Special Place, the first residential community in the country for adults with autism on February 20, 2012, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Reading Room of Filipinas Heritage Library in Makati City.

A selection of paintings by adults with autism will be up for silent auction. The remarkable young artists who donated their artworks for the cause are Matthew Aragon, Vico Cham and Andrei Macapagal.

A Special Place is the flagship project of AAAP, a non-profit group conceived and established by parents of persons with autism. The association aims to provide sustained enrichment opportunities and long-term care to these individuals as well as offer means to achieve personal growth, social interaction, and a cooperative life among their peers.

Sunflowers by Matthew Aragon

“We envision A Special Place as a nurturing community where adults with autism can thrive and achieve the full potential of their personhood. There will be programs to help residents develop their social and cognitive abilities, apply their learned skills in work opportunities, as well as engage in enjoyable recreational activities,” said Lirio Sobreviñas-Covey, President of AAAP.

Covey is currently Professor of Clinical Psychology and Senior Research Scientist at Columbia University in New York. She is mother to 33-year old Mikey, an adult with autism who now lives in a residential community also in New York.

Autism is a neurological condition characterized by a range and variety of behavioural and cognitive impairments. New psychological and social needs emerge as children with autism age and develop into adults. To date, it is estimated that there are more than 1 million Filipinos with autism.

“Autism is a lifelong disorder. Early intervention, occurring as early as the first two years of life, has been shown to improve language and socialization, but continued intervention and education throughout the course of the individual’s life is beneficial,” said Covey.

Lines and Circles by Vico Cham

A Special Place will initially consist of 6 individual homes located within the same campus with 6 residents and house parents assigned per unit. The residents will receive 24/7 supervision and care.

Working on the concept of “nature therapy”, AAAP already identified a site south of Manila. The chosen location fits the following requirements: cool environment, flood-free area, and relatively near a metropolitan area.

“Our focus now is to raise enough funds to make this dream a reality especially now that more and more Filipinos are diagnosed with autism. We’ll not always be here for our children and we believe it’s high time to have a facility here in the country that specifically caters to the needs of adults with autism, a place where they can enjoy a secure, independent, and comfortable life,” added Covey.

Yesterday the tally escalated to 80 then earlier today, Egyptian police shot and killed two. It was an eruption of sport violence and political crisis.

At least 3,000 were witnessed to have joined the protest after knowledge of one of the victims who died at the Port Said stadium was from Suez. The protesters proceeded to hurl stones and Molotov cocktails at the headquarters of the security forces. Police retaliated with tear gas and open fired according to a witness.

Protesters claimed that security forces were inactive during the Wednesday riot when soccer fans invaded the pitch after local team Al-Masry defeated Cairo’s Al-Ahly. About 10,000 gathered in front of the Interior Ministry.

“Either they will die or we will die,” an Al-Ahly soccer fan grunted as he joined the march of 10,000-strong mob to Cairo.

The two men of Suez died of gunshot wounds and at least 15 protesters were wounded.
