When Benjamin LaBrot was still a med student in 2005, he traveled to Tanzania with a backpack full of antiseptics, insulin syringes, VapoRub, gauze, ibuprofen and other supplies in his pack. He went to a Masai village and there he treated wounds, parasitic infections, sores and other ailments.
Now 4 years later, LaBrot continues his good deeds but on a much bigger scale.
LaBrot heads the “Floating Doctors“–a non-profit group of doctors who aim to sail to the open seas to provide free medical services to those who need it, especially in developing countries.
They’re called Floating Doctors because they’ll be traveling on a 76-foot sailboat called the “Southern Wind,” that will carry donated supplies. The Floating Doctors is comprised of 15 crew members.
LaBrot says of the Southern Wind, “This vessel serves as the housing for our crew, the storing of our medical equipment and supplies, the transport for our crew and our supplies, the base for our laboratory and equipment.”
The Southern Wind leaves November 1 from St. Augustine, Florida.
