Are you ready for the best night show of the year? The best part about this show is that it’s free! The Geminid meteor shower is what NASA dubs as the best meteor shower of 2009. It has already started but tonight, the real spectacle begins.
Maximum activity is expected on early Monday, around 12:10 a.m. EST (0510 UT). Astronomers say the peak of the shower is said to last several hours.
The best time to do some star-gazing would be around 9 p.m. local time tonight through dawn Monday. Although you probably want to take the word of NASA meteor expert Bill Cooke. He said the best time to watch is during the hours around local midnight.
Here are some tips and tricks on how you can maximize your meteor viewing experience:
* Dress warmly.
* Find a location away from porch lights and streetlights.
* Bring a blanket or lounge chair so you can lie down.
* Give your eyes 15 minutes to adjust to the darkness.
* Scan as much of the sky as possible.
