Actor Gene Barry died on Wednesday in Woodland Hills, California. He was 90 years old. Barry’s daughter Elizabeth confirmed his death.

Barry was known for his portrayal of “Bat Masterson”–a man who wore a derby hat with a gilt-tipped cane and wearing a spangled vest.

Barry’s real name is Eugene Klass. He was born on June 14, 1919. He won a singing contest and a scholarship to the Chatham Square School of Music when he was in high school. While in Chatham, he began singing on the New York radio station WHN.

His Broadway debut was “Pins and Needles.” He went on to play in a series of operettas at Carnegie Hall and in Broadway productions of “Rosalinda,” “The Merry Widow” and “The Would-Be Gentleman.”

Barry also won a Tony nomination in the 1980s for his performance in “La Cage Aux Folles,” the first Broadway musical where the main cast were gay lovers. He played Georges.
