Sport fishermen are catching giant squids by the hundreds after the huge creatures, weighing up to 27 kilograms, swum into waters off Newport Beach.
Fishermen started booking twilight fishing trips to catch the squids after they were noticed last week.
Robert Woodbury, from Newport Landing Sportfishing, said that the anglers come in two main types: those hungry for the relatively pricey delicacy, and the sports angler eager to tangle with a feistier sea creature.
He said, “Most of the fish we catch are better to eat, but they don’t give you much of a fight.”
He added that the squids were “trying to crawl around and blow ink all over everybody.”
Some 400 of the creatures had been caught since Friday night, Woodbury also said.
A few fishermen have reeled in 27-kilogram squids, but most of the animals weigh between 9 and 18 kilos.
