A team of MIT academics have suggested that global warming may be a natural occurring process in this planet, after they have noticed a consistent and encompassing increase in methane gas levels this year – the first recorded increase in ten years.
Methane gases in the atmosphere move rather slowly – it takes about a year for a unit of methane to circulate around the Earth. And since different countries produce different amounts of methane, the levels of methane on different parts of the world should be significantly varied.
However, the MIT team points out that this year’s methane increase has been incredibly level and constant althroughout the planet, and as such, suggests that there may be a greater underlying reason to global warming than just the direct result of man.
Methane in the atmosphere lets light from the Sun pass through it, but it doesn’t let it out again when the Earth reflects it back, resulting in a warmer climate the more methane there is in the atmosphere.
