Authorities in Haiti are aiming that come Friday, two-way traffic will be restored at the city’s south pier. Port-au-Prince’s north and south piers have been severely damaged by the 7.0-magnitude earthquake which struck Haiti on January 12.
On Thursday, Haitian authorities and US military were able to restore one-way traffic to the south pier, but the north pier is still not usable.
Canadian troops are also working to open an airport in Jacmel which is a seaside town, and is Haiti’s cultural capital.
The roads of Port-au-Prince have to be cleared, as bottlenecks at the ports, airports, and roads cause delay in food and medical aid to about 3 million Haitian who are in dire need of help. According to aid group Doctors Without Borders, also known as Medecins Sans Frontieres said delayed relief supplies have already led to at least five deaths.
Medical teams have been forced to improvise and work with the limited supplies that they have.Field coordinator for Doctors Without Borders Renzo Fricke said staffers had to by a saw to they could perform an amputation.
