Remember that Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at then-president Bush? After his infamous shoe-throwing, the journalist was imprisoned but is set to be released next month for good behavior.
What Muntadhar al-Zeidi did to President Bush during the US President’s news conference with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki was an act of protest against the US’ invasion and occupation in 2003. The action was received differently by different people. Sunni lawmaker Dhafir al-Ani said, “Al-Zeidi’s act expressed the real will and feelings of the Iraqi people. His anger against Bush was the result of the suffering of his countrymen.”
Al Zeidi was kept in custody since December 14. He was supposed to serve three years in prison after pleading not guilty to assaulting a foreign leader. His sentence was reduced to a year as he has no criminal background.
Defense attorney Karim al-Shujairi said al-Zeidi will be a free man on September 14. He said “His release will be a victory for the free and honorable Iraqi media.”
