Joe Mauer, Minnesota Twins’ catcher, was recently hailed as the American League’s Most Valuable Player on Monday. He also just won his third batting title in four seasons.
Receiving 27 of the 28 first-place votes by the Baseball Writers Association of America, Mauer defeated Mark Teixeira and Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees.
Mauer was humbled by the award. During a conference call he said, “It’s a tremendous honor. I’m real humbled by it. There are a lot great players in the American League, and the big leagues overall, and to be the MVP is hard to describe. It’s a great feeling.”
But he said he would rather have won the World Series than having won the MVP. Mauer is only 26 years old and already a three-time All-Star. He is the fifth Twins player to have won the MVP Award and only the tenth A.L. player who have three or more batting titles.
