Moira Cameron is the first woman ever to be selected to join the all-male ranks of Tower of London’s yeoman warders, popularly known as “Beefeaters.”

Hers is supposed to be a triumphant story which tells of a woman finding a place where she can serve her country and her queen. And yet, what happened Monday came as a shock. Some male Beefeaters were subject to a suspension for bullying Cameron.

The Tower released a statement saying that harassment among its staff was “totally unacceptable.” An internal investigation was also initiated last week. Cameron has suffered bullying and harassment from some of her resentful male colleagues.

Cameron shares one of her unfortunate experiences with the male Beefeaters. “I had one chap at the gate one day who said he was completely and utterly against me doing the job.”

And yet despite this, Cameron finds her work wonderful.

The warders are said to have been known as Beefeaters because during the medieval times, they were given extra rations of meat.
