There’s a penalty for being overweight. And for boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr it’s a whopping $600,000.
Floyd Mayweather Jr weighs two pounds too heavy for Saturday night’s welterweight Vegas showdown with Juan Manuel Marquez.
Golden Boy, the fight promoters have confirmed that there’d been a contractually agreed weight of 144 pounds. The weigh-in happened on Friday.
Mayweather weighed 146 pounds while Marquez was only 142.
Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer told ESPN.com that “The fight was contracted as a welterweight fight with an agreed upon weight of 144 pounds. However, there were pre-negotiated weight penalties built in.”
ESPN.com reports sources saying that for each extra pound, Mayweather is to pay $300,000. Marquez is already getting a $3.2 million guarantee for this fight.
Undefeated Mayweather has a career record of 39-0, while Marquez has 50 victories from 55 fights, 37 of which were by knockout. Marquez holds the WBA and WBO world lightweight belts.
