Michelle Mack was born with only half a brain. And yet despite that, she was able to graduate from high school and can speak normally.
Her childhood and young adult years were filled with frustration.
Mack shares about her difficulties saying, “It was very hard for me growing up. No one knew the truth about my brain.”
Mack’s parents were also met with the same hardship. “There wasn’t a group to turn to,” says Mack’s parents.
Fortunately, Dr. Jordan Grafman, chief of the Cognitive Neuroscience Section at the National Institutes of Health has diagnosed the problem ten years ago. “We were surprised to see the extent of the lesion in her brain, which basically took away the left side of her brain,” said Grafman.
When she was 27, the doctors found that the right side of Mack’s brain had essentially rewired itself to make up for function that was likely lost during pre-birth stroke.
One thing is for sure. Michelle Mack is a medical wonder. She is now 37 years old and works from home doing data entry for her church. She’s independent, able to pay her rent and do her share of household chores.
