Senior US officials revealed Friday that President Barack Obama recently shared sensitive intelligence with Russia and China about Iran’s newly unveiled nuclear facility to get the two countries’ leaders on board with new sanctions against Tehran.
One US senior official said that the strategy to build a coalition with Russia and China “has already begun to bear fruit.”
Because of the sensitive nature of the negotiations, the officials declined to be identified.
Like Russia and China, the US is a veto-wielding member of the UN Security Council.
Both countries have long opposed additional sanctions against Iran for its nuclear program, although Russian leaders recently have said they might be willing to compromise.
The International Atomic Energy Agency said Friday that Iran admitted to the existence of a second uranium enrichment plant in a letter sent to the IAEA on Monday.
In response, Obama said, “Iran is breaking rules that all nations must follow.”
