Here’s a very good reason to get out of the house tonight. The Orionid meteor shower is expected to put on a good show, and if weather cooperates, it will continue on until predawn hours on Wednesday.

The Orionid shower is in the constellation of the Orion.

The Orionid meteor shower happens annually, when the Earth passes through trails of comet debris left in the space by Halley’s Comet. We see those “shooting stars” when the bits vaporize in the Earth’s upper atmosphere.

Bill Cooke of the NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office said, “Flakes of comet dust hitting the atmosphere should give us dozens of meteors per hour.”

When is the best time to watch? The best time to catch this spectacle is between 1 AM and dawn local time on Wednesday morning. It’s reported that the peak activity will happen around 6 AM ET.

For the past years, the Orionid meteor showers have been strong. Cooke said since 2006, the Orionids have been one of the best showers of the year.
