The 82nd Academy Awards winner of Best Picture, The Hurt Locker has broken a new record in the movie industry.

As it competes with blockbuster hits like Avatar, Disney’s Up, and other more bankable films, The Hurt Locker has eventually surfaced as the big winner during Hollywood’s biggest event of the year.

The Hurt Locker bagged 6 Oscars out of nine–a remarkable feat considering it is the lowest grossing movie ever to win the Oscars. Word has it that it only earned $21 million.

Its director, Kathryn Bigelow, was hailed best director. Also a first in the Academy Awards, as Bigelow is the first woman to ever win in that category. Amongst others, she was competing against ex-husband James Cameron, who directed the epic 3D Avatar.

Aside from the Academy Awards, The Hurt Locker also earned honors from the Producers Guild, BAFTA, Broadcast Film Critics, the National Society of Film Critics and critics groups in New York and LA.
