Gangster movie Public Enemies open in theaters today July 1. Directed by Michael Mann, the movie is an adaptation of Bryan Burrough’s non-fiction book Public Enemies: America’s Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933–34.
Christian Bale plays FBI agent Melvin Purvis as he sets his sights on American gangsters John Dillinger(Johnny Depp), and Pretty Boy Floyd (Channing Tatum) in an attempt to curb a rampant Midwest crime spree during the 1930s.
The movie got mixed reviews and is currently rated at 47% on film review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
Here’s one review that scored the movie as “rotten”:
Overall impact is muted. Oddly, too, the film is somewhat shortchanged by its great star, Johnny Depp, who disappointingly has chosen to play Dillinger as self-consciously cool rather than earthy and gregarious. (Todd McCarthy/Variety)
and one that gave the movie a “fresh” score:
Something about Dillinger’s bloody, summary death has always nagged at the public; Mann is clearly urging today’s audiences to draw its own conclusions. (Rafer Guzman/Newsday)
