Another new species has been named after the popular television host, wildlife expert and conservationist, the late Steve Irwin.
Scientist Dr John Stanisic of the Queensland Museum has named a rare species of tree snail after Irwin to honor the wildlife advocate.
The snail now goes with the name, Crikey steveirwini. The species was discovered in north Queensland, in the mountainous regions of north Queensland’s Wet Tropics near Cairns.
Dr Stanisic says that like Irwin, the snail is a unique creature with interesting qualities that set it apart from the other land snails.
Aside from that, there’s also one peculiar similarity. Dr Stanisic says, “It was the khaki color that immediately drew the connection to the late Crocodile Hunter.”
On Sunday, Australia Zoo will celebrate its Steve Irwin Day. Dr Stanisic will be there to present a commemorative certificate the Irwin’s family. He will also present to the public some Crikey steveirwini shells.
