Academy Award-winning director Roman Polanski was finally held in custody for a crime he’s been accused of several decades ago.
Polanski, who was trying to enter Switzerland on Saturday, was taken by the Swiss authorities. He was supposed to attend the Zurich Film Festival, which was holding a tribute to him. He was also nominated for best director Oscars for “Tess” and “Chinatown” and for best writing for “Rosemary’s Baby,” a film which he also directed.
Polanski was arrested due to a request by US authorities in connection with an arrest warrant from way back 1978.
In 1977, Polanski pleaded guilty to a single count of having unlawful sex with a 13-year old girl. He fled the US before he was given the sentence but was issued a warrant the next year.
Polanski took refuge in France and lived there ever since. In 2003, he won an Academy Award for Best Director for the film, “The Pianist.”
