A police officer pulled over and arrested California Republican State Senator Roy Ashburn due to drunk driving.

The incident happened early Wednesday morning when the officer came up to him and discovered that he was drunk. Ashburn just came from a gay nightclub, according to some reports. The senator is a popular politician who is known for fiercely opposing gay rights.

It was reported that there was unidentified person on his passenger seat, when the officer pulled him over.

“I am deeply sorry for my actions and offer no excuse for my poor judgment. I accept complete responsibility for my conduct and am prepared to accept the consequences for what I did. I am also truly sorry for the impact this incident will have on those who support and trust me–my family, my constituents, my friends, and my colleagues in the Senate,” Ashburn apologized.
