The Cecil B DeMille Award for lifetime achievement at the Golden Globes will be awarded to veteran director Martin Scorsese next year.
Best known for Taxi Driver and Goodfellas, the 66-year-old Scorsese will receive the prize at a ceremony on 17 January.
Actress Vera Farmiga made the announcement at a news conference on Thursday. She appeared in Scorsese’s Oscar-winning movie The Departed.
Scorsese had “the power to rouse a crowd” and “cinema is his shrine,” she said.
The filmmaker is being presented the award for his “outstanding contribution to the entertainment field.”
Steven Spielberg, Sir Anthony Hopkins, and Michael Douglas are past winners of the DeMille award.
The Golden Globes have previously honored Scorsese as best director for The Departed and Gangs of New York. He had been nominated for Casino, Age of Innocence, Goodfellas, and Raging Bull.
Next year’s event will take place at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel and hosted by British comedian Ricky Gervais.
