There are only a few things better than sex and Shrek is one of them. Over the weekend, moviegoers went out to watch Mike Myers reprise his famous ogre character instead of watching Sarah Jessica Parker and her three best friends in Sex and the City 2.
DreamWorks Animation’s sequel “Shrek Forever After” stayed in the No. 1 for a second weekend with $43.3 million earnings from Friday to Sunday. Shrek raised its domestic total to $133.1 million.
Meanwhile, SJP’s Sex and the City sequel was in No. 2 with only $32.1 million debut. Many expected this movie to open stronger despite its bad reviews and long running time.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time debuted at No. 3 with $30.2 million.
Head of distribution for Warner Bros., Dan Fellman, said that “Sex and the City 2″ will have taken in about $53 million in its first five days once Memorial Day receipts are counted. He added, “The numbers are the numbers, but it’s a little unfair to go in the direction of trouble in River City until we have an opportunity to see how we leg it out. We might end up getting there. It’s just a different pattern than the first one.”
