We all take a power nap once in a while–to recharge after a stressful day at work. But in the case of Louisa Ball, her nap took more than just a few minutes–she slept for days!
Yes, days. 15-year old Louisa suffers from what’s called a Sleeping Beauty Sickness, a very rare condition that strikes teenagers. Even doctors don’t know what causes this sickness, only that it goes away after eight to twelve years.
Louisa’s mum told NBC news that the teenager suffered flulike symptoms about a year ago and then shortly afterwards, she had her first time to sleep for days.
Louisa was diagnosed with Kleine-Levin Syndrome. According to specialists, victims of this syndrome do not exceed a thousand. The poor victims live normally for weeks and even months with normal sleeping patterns and normal energy levels. But they can suddenly sleep for days or even weeks at a time. When the victims wake up, they are usually disoriented.
As for Louisa, her longest nap took her about 13 days before she woke up. Her mum recalls Louisa’s very first episode. “We couldn’t wake her up. It was just really constant ‘Louisa, will you get up, please. Have something to eat.’ She couldn’t have the energy to just open her eyelids.”
