As the world remembers Elvis Presley’s birth, the Smithsonian Institution also does its part by showcasing the icon in many art forms.
Exhibits will open on Friday in Washington and Los Angeles. “One Life: Echoes of Elvis” will run until August at the National Portrait Gallery. This one-room exhibit is focused on the King of Rock n’ Roll’s influence after his death.
The Smithsonian’s traveling exhibit will be at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles on Friday to bring to public “Elvis at 21: Photographs by Alfred Wertheimer.” This exhibit shows 56 images taken before Elvis rose to fame.
Some other highlights of the exhibit include portraits, images from Graceland the mansion where Elvis lived, and some Elvis merchandise. Commercial images include an Elvis-imprinted lunch box, nutcracker, action figure and snow globe.
Curator Warren Perry says, “Think of all the entertainers you know, and how many of them do you know the names of their homes? Everybody needs to have a moment with Elvis.”
