Seven year old Somer Thompson disappeared on her way home from school earlier this week. Investigators began looking for her and found her 2 days after she’s gone missing–in a garbage dump site.
The investigators tailed nine garbage trucks from Somer’s neighborhood to a Georgia landfill only 50 miles away. They sorted through more than 225 tons of trash before finally discovering Somer’s lifeless body, her legs sticking out of the pile.
Sheriff Rick Beseler said the tactic they did may have saved precious evidence that can point to the identity of the killer.
The autopsy was performed on Thursday, but Sheriff Beseler is not ready to disclose the findings on how little Somer died, or if the crime was committed by one person or by a group.
Beseler said, “I fear for our community until we bring this person in. This is a heinous crime that’s been committed.”
He also said that the police have already questioned more than 155 registered sex offenders in the area.
On Thursday, about 200 people gathered across the street from Somer’s home to hold a candlelight vigil.
