Residents of the southern California area were greeted by space shuttle Discovery‘s distinct sonic boom on it’s approach to Edwards Air Base where it landed safely at about 5:50 p.m. this afternoon.

With the East Coast battered by bad weather, Discovery was forced to land at the air base instead of the usual Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

According to information published by NASA, the shuttle left the Earth’s orbit just before 5 p.m. with a 3 to 4 minute “de-orbit” burn which slowed the Discovery enough to enter the Earth’s atmosphere.

The Discovery landing completes the 14 day supplies delivery mission to the International Space Station.
