Grammy award-winning singer Stevie Wonder has been appointed a United Nations’ “messenger of peace.” The UN made this announcement on Wednesday. They added that Wonder’s special focus will be on people with disabilities.

UN’s messengers of peace are celebrities who usually belong to the field on film, music, literature, and sports. They promote UN activities and ideals through public appearances and media contacts.

In a statement, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon described Stevie Wonder as “a true inspiration to young people all over the world about what can be achieved despite any physical limitations. He has consistently used his voice and special relationship with the public to create a better and more inclusive world, to defend civil and human rights and to improve the lives of those less fortunate.”

Wonder has been blind shortly after his birth. But he never let this disability hinder him from his God-given musical talents. At age 9 he could play the harmonica, piano and even the drums. He is now 59 years old.
