Swine flu caused 11 more deaths in the US and all of these victims were children. Health officials are getting worried over the number of child deaths caused by swine flu recently. They are also warning that the flu vaccine will remain scarce for the upcoming weeks.
Delay in the production of the vaccine translates to less vaccine to be shared by various states which need it badly. This also means the flu-shot clinics in some areas could be postponed.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that about half of the child deaths since September were teenagers. The deaths from flu-like illnesses and pneumonia have reached epidemic level.
CDC’s Dr. Anne Schuchat says, “These are very sobering statistics.”
The swine flu’s new strain is affecting the kids more than it does the old. Since the new strain broke out last spring, 86 children have died from it. 43 of that total number were reported in September and October alone.
