There is a new product becoming increasingly popular in teen parties nowadays. And it’s not beer nor prescription medicines. It’s an herb-based product that is getting teens high, and what’s worse, it’s completely legal.

The product is known as K2 or Spice, a sort-of synthetic marijuana that, when smoked, gives the same high one gets from the real thing. Health care professionals, law enforcement authorities and lawmakers have grown quite alarmed by its popularity.

K2 and other substances just like it are manufactured in Asia and sold online, marketed as herbal incense. A K2 selling website has a disclaimer that “K2 Herbal products are novelty incenses and are not for consumption.”

Packaged in three-gram bags with different flavours, the product is made up of herbs and sprayed with synthetic chemicals that mimic THC, the substance in marijuana that induces the “high”.

Health and drug officials have been calling for regulation of this product, as the danger of the lack of quality assurance controls in its production may pose as a bigger threat to the health of those taking it.
