The tandem of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp is already a proven hit, and with Helena Bonham-Carter joining in, there’s really no surprise that Disney’s newest remake of Alice in Wonderland opened strongly on Friday. This, amidst mixed film reviews.

In fact, the film has broken a record for a March release at the weekend box office in North America with earnings reaching $41 million on its opening day, according to distributor Walt Disney Co.

Alice in Wonderland is expected to break the record of 300, when it earned $71 million in its March opening weekend in 2007. “Alice” is also likely to go above $100 million.

The film also stars Anne Hathaway as the White Queen with Australian Mia Wasikowska playing the lead character of Alice.

Alice in Wonderland opened across the US and Canada on Friday, and is also playing in 40 foreign countries.
