The Toyota recall is now affecting Europe. According to an official with Toyota, the faulty gas pedals which triggered the sales suspension of eight of Toyota’s best-selling cars in the US–including the Camry–were also used in the vehicles sold in Europe.
Toyota spokeswoman Ririko Takeuch said problem could spread to Europe, since a similar accelerator part is being used.
On late Tuesday, the automaker announced the unprecedented sales suspension to fix the pedals which can stick and cause acceleration without warning.
Toyota is also stopping production at six North American car-assembly plants and this is set to begin on the week of February 1. No advice has been given on when the production would resume.
Since the problem part stems from a US supplier, the recall does not affect models that use parts from other suppliers, like Toyota Japan.
Meanwhile, Toyota promises to fix this, with the group vice president and general manager Bob Carter saying, “This action is necessary until a remedy is finalized.”
