In Miami Florida, a tropical storm could very well emerge into a hurricane. Tropical storm Ida has the possibility of regaining hurricane status on Saturday night as it heads the direction of the Gulf Coast, where it will probably bring heavy rains and coastal flooding.
The National Hurricane Center has already put the Northern Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico under a hurricane watch and a tropical storm warning, as well as the Pinar del Rio in western Cuba.
Under a hurricane watch, hurricane conditions are possible within 36 hours. Under a tropical storm watch, tropical storm conditions are possible within 24 hours.
Ida made landfall on east central Nicaragua on Thursday morning. It headed toward north-northwest at about 10 mph (17 kph) and was about 180 miles (290 km) east-southeast of Cozumel, Mexico, at around 7 p.m. ET.
The Atlantic hurricane season ends on November 30. So far, Ida is its 9th named storm.
