This year ‘s Vernal Equinox, otherwise known as the Spring Equinox or March Equinox, happens today, March 20, 2010.
The Vernal Equinox is when the sun crosses the winter, signifying the end of winter and the official start of spring in the northern hemisphere and autumn in the southern hemisphere. Vernal Equinox 2010 officially starts at 1:32 p.m. EST.
An equinox happens twice annually, in March and September (known as the autumnal equinox), when the sun shines directly on the equator and the lengths of day and night are equal all over the world.
Because the equinox is a change in seasons, it holds great significance in many cultures and religions all over the world. In Mexico, the Ancient Mayan ruins in Chichen Itza serves as the site for the celebration of the Vernal Equinox. Thousands of tourists and locals gather at the site to participate in the festivities.
In Japan, on the other hand, it is declared an official national holiday and is usually spent visiting the graves of family members who have passed away, or holding family reunions.
