A source with knowledge of the situation confirmed on Thursday that the Washington Wizards have agreed to a trade with the Chicago Bulls to acquire Kirk Hinrich and the 17th overall pick in exchange for a future second-round choice.
The deal provides the Wizards with a defensive-minded veteran guard with the ability to play both backcourt positions and the opportunity to add a quality player in the middle of the first round.
The Wizards had to absorb the final two years and $17 million remaining on Hinrich’s contract, but they were allowed to keep the 30th and 35th selections in the process.
Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld has long coveted Hinrich, a former all-defensive guard who has started on the 2006 World Championship team.
For several times, the Wizards have attempted to acquire Hinrich in trades and Grunfeld wanted to take him in the 2003 NBA draft, but had to settle for T.J. Ford when Hinrich went one spot ahead of Ford.
