European champions Spain and a rejuvenated England booked their World Cup places with two games to spare on Wednesday by both maintaining their perfect records in qualifying rounds.
Spain’s 3-0 victory over Estonia and top spot in Europe’s Group 5 was clinched by the goals of Cesc Fabregas, Santi Cazorla and, Juanma Mata.
In a reversal of roles, Croatia—which stopped England from reaching last year’s European Championship—was defeated 5-1 by the English who are now secured in their place in South Africa.
Eleven more European berths are undecided. Aside from Spain and England, Netherlands is also sure of competing in the 32-nation finals next year.
France, the 1998 World Cup winners, might miss out on a major tournament after a second straight draw—this time with Group 7 leader Serbia.
Meanwhile, Portugal defeated Hungary and Italy lorded over Bulgaria.
