In Orlando, Florida a animal trainer died after being attacked by a killer whale at the Sea World Amusement Park.

Tilikum, the 30-year-old, 12,300-pound bull orca, jumped out of the tank and grabed Dawn Brancheau around her waist and pulled her underwater. Brancheau died at the age of 40.

This incident is the latest in the string of fatalities involving experienced animal trainers and wildlife experts.

December 2009: Alexis Martinez Hernandez, a wildlife trainer, died at the age of 29 when he fell from a whale and crushed his rib cage at Loro Parque on the Spanish island of Tenerife.

October 2009: Anton Turner, a British safari guide, died at the age of 38 when he was charged down by an elephant during filming of a BBC children’s programme in Tanzania.

April 2008: Stephan Miller, an American animal trainer and Hollywood stunt double, died at the age of 39 when he was mauled by a five-year old grizzly bear named Rocky in San Bernardino, California.

I think it is disgusting having an animal that large and that intelligent in captivity, maybe he had jsut had enough. Humans think they can control far to much. She didnt deserve to die but maybe this will make people realise these animals deserve better

Any sane person (not out to make a buck) looking at a video or witnessing an Orca in their natural environment and then seeing them trapped in a tank the size of cup of water in comparison to it’s natural environment would know why this happened.

It should be clear and obvious how this intelligent, social animal would become agitated and aggressive in the situation it has had to live in. An Alpha male used for breeding and kept isolated, whose job is splashing the audience and reproducing. Please!

This is not a gold fish. This wild caught animals dorsal fin and tail have curled from being in such a small environment. These animals are immensely too large and too intelligent to be kept in ‘confinement’ like this. They were never meant to live this way so ‘people’ can make tons of money off of them. Are we not intelligent enough not to support this… intelligent enough to ‘appreciate them in the wild as they were meant to live’.

I thought I wanted to work with dolphins and worked briefly at Sea World in San Diego as a volunteer to get into it. But after a very short time of observing these animals lives and having witnessed the life they live at sea (observing them while sailing) I soon realized I wanted no part of this.

Keeping any wild animal in small enclosures for our entertainment and to make money off of them is inhumane and a recipe for disaster, both for the animal and eventually to the humans close to them in this situation.

Money does not rule. They are not meant to be slaves. This is no different then taking a person from their family and chaining them up to do our bidding. These animals have the right to live their lives as they were meant to by natures design.
As do all animals and we need to be spending our energy preserving their domain instead of destroying it for short term gain. Past time to wake up!

I perform with these dogs and as far as animal behavior goes, I am a strong believer in nurture and exercising. I’ve met Jack Russell Terriers that I would not go in close proximity to once again, but have for no reason had a bad experience with an American Staffordshire Terrier. If you’re talking about their owners- well, that’s a distinct story. Humans are creatures as nicely, and we have a tendency to each have our very own concepts about “moral concepts”.
