Spain and Netherlands have never met in a World Cup match and and, in fact, have only clashed nine times in history, with each side claiming four wins and one draw. They have met in one final before – the Olympic Final in 1920 when Spain won 3-1 – but in recent results Netherlands have come out on top, with Spain’s last win back in 1983.
Netherlands is currently the only unbeaten team in the 2010 World Cup and will be looking forward to rectify their defeats in 1974 and 1978. “We are so close to writing history,” said Dirk Kuyt. “This is the third time we have reached the final. Now we have to win it. We felt before the tournament we had the quality in the team to win it. We are so close. There is nothing bigger than the World Cup.”
Spain’s Gerard Piqué feels the same way saying: “It’s a great chance for us to make history and win the World Cup. Other squads have the experience of winning the World Cup in the past, but it is our dream.”
Even though Spain has only conceded only two goals so far, they are still favored by most of lift the World Cup with Golden Generation players like Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Xabi Alonso, David Villa and Fernando Torres.
